Selena: 3/10
Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Directed by: Gregory Nava
Taglines: -The story of a girl who had the spirit to believe in a dream and the courage to make it come true.
Starring:
-Jennifer Lopez
-Edward James Olmos
-Constance Marie
-Jon Seda
-Lupe Ontiveros

This is based on the true life of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. A Mexican with a talent for singing, struggling to become number one. Her albums topped the Latin music charts and her latest album got to number one in the US, however it was too late for her to see that, as she tragically died.

It wasn't a horrible movie, but it was pretty bad. JLo did do a good job of portraying Selena, but I think the fact that it's JLo made it kinda...bleh. I mean every time she laughed it was like my ears bled. (No offense to JLo fans) The movie wasn't entirely clear as to what happened at the end. I'm not sure why. But the actual story is really interesting and incredibly sad and tragic. I do recommend you see this, just to get an idea of who Selena was. The movie did do a good job of showing her life and her struggles, her feelings and her family's feelings. It was good. Just not great.
Here is a clip video of the real Selena, performing live, one of her hit songs Como La Flor. I think it's a great song, and it was tragic that she died so young.

A scene from the movie.

Directed by James Merendino
Cast:
Matthew Lillard
Micheal A. Goorjian
Adam Pascal
Annabeth Gish
James Duval

To grow up in America is to, at one point or another, rebel against the world around you. If you're Stevo and you live in Reagan-era Salt Lake City, then, well...you just have to rebel a little bit harder. To this recent grad, the world is his enemy, anarchy his religion, and the Ramones, The Specials and the Dead Kennedys his muses. As he takes us on a guided tour of his life, we meet all sorts of punks, poseurs, mods, freaks and a few others best described as indescribable.

Stevo's ex-hippie father sees his lifestyle as a rite of passage and urges him to attend Harvard Law School like himself. Not to sell out to the system, but to buy in. For Stevo, underneath the mohawk haircuts, earrings and leather, the idea, painfully, has some merit. The question becomes; how do you stay hard-core and still hope for a life beyond?

This movie really surprised me. I was expecting it to be some movie about a bunch of teens complaining all the time and what not, but it was really good, and funny too.
I must admit the only reason why I saw it in the first place was because Adam Pascal was is in, but I ended up really liking the movie. I give it a 6/10.
I won't guarantie that you'll like you, because it depends on your taste in movies, but I will say check it out, it's pretty good, but that's just my view.

Mambo Italiano

Directed by Emile Gaudreault
Cast:
Luke Kirby
Ginette Reno
Paul Sorvino
Mary Walsh
Peter Miller
Claudia Ferri
Sophie Lorain

Maria and Gino (GINETTE RENO and PAUL SORVINO), emigrated from Italy to Montreal in the 50's and married after their arrival in "the new world", a world they still haven't quite gotten used to. Their world is shattered when their son, Angelo (LUKE KIRBY), decides to get a place of his own. "What is so wrong with living with your parents until you get married?" they ask. They are relieved however, when Angelo's childhood buddy, Nino (PETER MILLER), decides to move in with their son. After all, Nino is an old family friend and he's a respectable cop. Their relief is short lived, as they find out that Nino and Angelo are much more than mere roommates-they're (gasp) lovers! All hell breaks loose (Italian-style, of course!) Horror is followed by a general outcry, disbelief is followed by indignation, the battlefield is cleared, and "tutta la famiglia" goes to war!

Will Angelo and Nino be able to resist the gargantuan pressure coming at them from all sides and find the strength to survive as a couple? Will Nino be able to withstand the seductive charms of the voluptuous Pina? Will Angelo find the courage to fully come out of the closet and confront the whole of them while he accepts himself?

Mambo Italiano is hysterically funny and deeply moving. Adapted from the successful play by the same name, the movie explores further the subtleties and complexities of this quintessential Italian family-a family straddling the cultures, traditions, and mores of the old and new worlds.

I was so excited when this movie came out, mainly because it was filmed in my neighborhood and I know some of the extras that are in it. Being Italian, I was excited to see how the writers would portray Italian families, and I must say, they did a pretty good job. The movie actualy kinda reminds me of my family, the whole smacking eachother over the head during dinner, living at home until you get married, never being able to leave the house without arguing...yup, a true Italian family. I give this movie a 7/10. So if you like funny, I recommend it, because it is funny, but that's just my view.

The Simpsons Movie Trailer

I think it's sad for the bunny. The beginning was pretty good, with the bunny and all that, but I do hope they don't ruin the tv show. Most of the time, these things come out bad.

Stephen Colbert on Bill O'Reilly
Thursday, January 25, 2007
So it took a few days, but finally, here it is, Stephen Colbert on the O'Reilly factor.

So, I think Bill O'Reilly is a complete fool and he obviously hates Jon Stewart. I don't know why. But I think it's hilarious how Stephen Colbert is in character, I absolutely love him. I don't know if Bill O'Reilly knows Stephen Colbert is joking or not, but either way it was fantastic.

Jesus Camp: A Documentary

Jesus Camp.

A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement. This documentary, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, directors of the critically acclaimed "The Boys of Baraka," follows Levi, Rachael, and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's army." (Magnolia Pictures)

Seriously, this is just twisted. If you watched the trailer you'll know what I'm talking about. Becky Fischer, a pentacostal preacher runs Kids on Fire, the summer camp in North Dakota in which the film talks about.
Now I don't want to come off as bashing religious people, because I am absolutely not, but this is why I stay away from religion.
These kids are basically being brainwashed. I'm sorry but training kids to be warriors of God and fighting in his army? Like what is that all about? They are taking everything out of context.
"There are two kinds of people on this earth, people who loves Jesus, and people who don't" as said by one of the mothers in the film, and also "You're with us, or you're against us"
I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't agree with that. Isn't he all about love and acceptance? They are telling these kids to go out and fight the non christians, once again, I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't want that.
They were certain points in the film where I had to stop and ask myself "is this real?" Because some of the things we see are just plain shocking and disturbing.

So I give this movie a 6/10. I definately recommend it. It's interesting to know about things that go on, and while I do not agree with any of the things the people in the film believe in, and think they took everything from the bible out of context and put in into their own words, this is an amazing Documentary. But that's just my view.

Depeche Mode Grammy Nomination!!
Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Depeche Mode has been nominated for a Grammy in "Best Dance Recording" for "Suffer Well." Here is the video.

The competitors are "Ooh La La" by Goldfrapp.

"Get Together" by Madonna

"I'm With Stupid" by Pet Shop Boys

I think they sound kind of New Order ish.

and Finally "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake

I'd love for Depeche Mode to win, but I think they got it tough. Pet Shop Boys and Goldfrapp are sounding really good to me. Especially since it's in a dance category. Those are good dance songs. So, good luck DM. Hope you win.
Who do you want to take home the Grammy?

On thursday the 18, Bill O'Reilly went on The Colbert Report. It was the funniest thing ever. Colbert bashed him in subtle, and not so subtle ways. Later on, Colbert went on the O'Reilly show. I'll post that one up later on. Enjoy this for now.

Clerks and Clerks2

Clerks
Its just another day for Dante Hicks, until his boss calls him into work at the Quickstop on his day off. With a hockey game at 2, and his girlfriend still hacking him about going to back to school. Dante begins to get into a bigger frenzy when he learns his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin, is getting married. With his always late accomplice Randall strolling in to work at the video store, Dante is left with no choice but to bend the rules a little with work, customers, and most of all his love life. Can he get away with it all?
Clerks2
A calamity at Dante and Randall's shops sends them looking for new horizons - but they ultimately settle at Mooby's, a fictional fast-food restaurant. Free from his dead-end job (and lodged in a new one), Dante begins to break free of his rut, planning to move away with his clingy fiancé. Dante is ready to leave the horrors of minimum-wage New Jersey behind, but Randal - always the more hostile of the two - starts to become overwhelmed by his own rancor.
I personally really liked these movies. I actually hadn't seen the first one until a couple weeks before the second one came out. And I actually kinda like the second one better, but the first one is really good.
I must admit one of the main reasons why I find it funny is because of the character Jay. I find that without him, the movies wouldn't have been that great, especially the second one, he's hysterical. I really liked Rosario Dawson in the second one, she portrayed Becky really well and came off as really sweet. I think Kevin Smith did a good job on writing a second one, it let us clerks fans see what the boys are up to. But that's just my view.

Jake Gyllenhaal on SNL
Sunday, January 21, 2007
Yes, this is slightly old. But for those of you who either missed, or don't watch SNL, here is the opening monologue, with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Personally, I love the cowboys. I know if Lisa was with me, while I saw it, she'd agree. She sure loves the cowboys....and Gyllenhaal.

Thanks for killing me Lisa, thanks. (You know what I'm talking about, and if you don't shame on you, shame!)

RENT. Broadway musical turned Movie.

Hello people. Before starting my first review I just want to say thanks to DirtyVelvet for inviting to come write about stuff, I hope you guys like it.

So for my first posting I shall be talking about RENT. The broadway musical turned movie. I guess it's pretty obvious that I am a huge RENT fan, hence the name The RentHead.
Original Broadway Cast:
Adam Pascal/Roger Davis
Anthony Rapp/Mark Cohen
Idina Menzel/Maureen Johnson
Wilson Jermaine Heredia/Angel Dumott Schunard
Taye Diggs/"Benny" Benjamin Coffin the third
Jesse L. Martin/Tom Collins
Daphne Rubin-Vega/Mimi Marquez
Fredi Walker/Joanne Jefferson
RENT is a musical written by Johnathan Larson which was inspired from La Boheme, an opera written by Giacomo Puccini.
RENT tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to live and pay their rent. Measuring their lives in love, these starving artists strive for succes and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.
RENT is about coping with life, dealing with love, loss, fear, and AIDS.
RENT started has an off broadway production in 1994 at the New York Theater Workshop. Then moved to broadway in 1996.
Unfortunately, the day before opening night, the writer, Johnathan Larson died from an aortic aneurysm.
But RENT went on to be the 8th longest running show in the history of broadway. And still playing today.
In 2005 director Christopher Columbus along with writer Steve Chbosky and executive producers Allan Gordon, Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller, turned one of the most popular and loved broadway musicals into a motion picture. So with the exception of 2 original cast members, the original broadway cast got together and reprised their roles for the movie. The 2 who were not in the film were Daphne Rubin-Vega and Fredi Walker.
So in came Rosario Dawson as Mimi Marquez and Tracie Thoms as Joanne Jefferson.
I have to say the movie to me was very well done. Chris Columbus did a great job. It was great to see most of the original cast come back and do the movie.
I often hear people say that RENT changed their lives in one way or another, and it's true, I know it changed mine.
RENT is a powerful, funny, energetic, moving, sad story that really makes us think about life.
The lyrics of the songs can really make you think, make you cry, and make you wanna dance and sing along, from the energetic upbeat La Vie Boheme to the sad and heartbreaking yet beautiful Goodbye Love.
So RENT on my list is a 10/10. But that's just my view, but I do
recommend it. It truly is a masterpiece.

Directed by: Frank Coraci
Taglines: -What If You Had A Universal Remote... That Controlled Your Universe?
Starring:
-Adam Sandler
-Kate Beckinsale
-David Hasselhoff
-Sophie Monk
-Christopher Walken

Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) is an overworked, neglectant, husband and father. He is given a remote control that controls his universe. He can pause, mute, rewind, fastforward, change languages and so on. He starts to use the remote excessively and soon realizes that he's missing out on, not only his life, but everyone else around him who he loves.

When I went to see this I thought it was going to be retarded. Actually, I only saw it because there was nothing else in theaters at the time. But it is surprisingly really touching. I actually cried. It was very sad. There were a few things that were odd in the movie, but other than that, it was ok. I wouldn't buy or rent it again, but I don't regret spending 10$ on it. So, if you haven't seen it. I say at least rent it.

Golden Globes
Tuesday, January 16, 2007
So, yesterday was the Golden Globes. I watched most of it and it was pretty enjoyable. There were quite a few of celebrities present and the girl giving the awards was Jack Nicholson's daughter. She's very pretty. All right, so at first I started looking for pictures to post, just of people that I liked or that won awards. However, the more I looked the more horrified I was at the awful dresses and poses some of the people did. So, I decided to do my own who was hot, who was not. Starting now.

First up is Jennifor Lopez. She was a presenter. Now, I'll do some constructive critisicm instead of straight out bashing her, as I would do with anyone else. The reason? Well, Kevin is in love with her. Anyways. I do have to give JLo some credit. She did look good. Her dress is beautiful, except for the side. The way it was open was kind of odd. If I could see her back, maybe I could judge it better, but in this picture it looks great. When she was on stage and moved her arms, there was this huge gap on the side and it just looked bad. But still. She did a good job. Hot.

Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Performance In a Motion Picture Drama. The movie was Little Children. She did not win, but she did look great. I'm not a huge fan of strapless dresses, but she made this one look fantastic. And that braclet is shiny. However he colour lipstick was not a good choice. It did not correspond to the rest of her ensemble. I know when your make up matches your clothes it means your old, I'm not saying she should of done that. That would've been sad. I'm saying, she should've picked a lighter colour. Rethink the make up next time Kate. Still though, hot.

Good god. I don't know if it's because I hate her so much or if it's because she just looks this godawful, but Renee Zellweger did NOT look well at all. She was there for Best Performance In a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. She did not win and her dress did not make up for it. Ok, maybe her dress was nice. But that pose she's doing and just her I dislike. Good work on the clothes Renee, not so good work on yourself. Ya, that's mean, but that's what happens when you're in the show business. People tend to dislike you for no apparent reason. Get over it. Not hot.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Brad Pitt was there for Best Performance In a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. The movie was Babel. Brad Pitt did not win but the movie did win Best Motion Picture Drama. Jolie was simply there for Brad. Well Brad Pitt got uglier after he left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina, (unless he's in those fancy outfits or is Tyler Durden) and Angelina, well she's pretty but her dress wasn't so. True this is just based on my taste and not "proffesional judgment", whatever the hell that means, but I dislike empire waists and she kinda has that going. It's not real empire waste but more in between which is even more annoying. The colour of the dress is nice and I love the way it flows at the bottom. But once again, not in for the strapless thing, so it kinda added to the dislike of the dress. Both not hot.

I'm not sure why Reese Witherspoon was there but I just HAD to mention her. She looked absolutley AMAZING!!!! Ok, yes in this picture her chin is kind of squared because it seems as though she is fighting back a laugh or smile, but she looks grogeous. I think the change is in her hair, however that just seemed to make all the more difference. It's beautiful, I love what she has done. I hardly recognized her when I saw her. She's gorgeous. Hot, hot, hot, hot!

Here is Jennifer Hudson. She was nominated for Best Performance In a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. And she won!!! I loved her dress, her hair, her make up. She looked gorgeous and I am so happy she won. I love the way she was kicked off American Idol early on, but showed them all that not only can she really sing, but she can act and win a Golden Globe. Go girl! HOT!

Beyonces Knowles was nominated for Best Performance In a Motion Picture comedy or musical. She did not win. Ok, I know Beyonces is "hot" and we all know she knows it, but what the hell is with that pose of hers? Like...jesus, get over yourself. I'm sorry, she may be pretty and that dress may be nice, but I'm going with not hot simply becasuse she's atrocious. Ya, I said it. Atrosious.

Well I think that's a lovely place to end there. I'll pick up on the rest of them tomorrow. There is plenty more to do.

-When the lights go off, it's on.
-See the side of the museum you won't see on the tour.
-At the Museum of Natural History, something unnatural is occurring.

Starring:
-Ben Stiller
-Dick Van Dyke
-Mickey Rooney
-Jake Cherry
-Bill Cobbs
-Ricky Gervais
-Carla Gugino
-Mizuo Peck
-Robin Williams
-Owen Wilson

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is a divorced parent. He is in need of a job and soon becomes a night guard at the Museum of Natural History. As soon as he locks the doors, everything comes to life. He tries to control the museum, but they are all just too hectic.

I saw this one with Lisa and I thought I was going to see a stupid comedy movie, however, this was surprisingly hilarious! It was so funny!!! It was classic Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson comedy. Robin Williams did a fantastic job and Mizuo Peck was gorgeous. But really, it was just great. The dialogue was good, there was subtle humour and outright humour. I say see it. Favorite characters are Jedediah and Octavius. Good times Lise.

9/10

P.S. For some reason Owen Wilson is uncredited even though he has a pretty big role.

-The bride is back for the final cut.
-This Spring, it's not over 'til it's over
-Kill is love.
-On April 16th...The quest for revenge continues...
-Back with a vengeance.

-The whole thrilling tale is revealed.
Starring:
-Uma Thurman
-David Carradine
-Lucy Liu
-Vivica A. Fox
-Chia Hui Liu
-Michael Madsen
-Daryl Hannah
-Michael Parks

The bride (Uma Thurman), continues on with her quest for revenge, while she remember parts of her past.

Although I liked this one a lot. I think the first one may have been better. Though, I did find more humour in this one than I did in the first one. Not much to say about this one. I liked the flashbacks and then the ending. It was good. I think there is going to be third one. But that's just what I think. Though I thought I heard somewhere that Quentin Tarantino said there was going to be another. We will just have to wait and see.

The Pursuit of Happyness: 5/10

Pursuit of Happyness (In theaters).
Directed by: Gabriele Muccino
Starring:
-Will Smith
-Jaden Smith
-Thandie Newton
-Brian Howe
-James Karen
-Dan Castellaneta
-Kurt Fuller

A man named Chris Gardner (Will Smith) takes custody of his son (Jaden Smith), after his wife (Thandie Newton) leaves, due to the family being poor and not able to pay the bills. Thus, Chris and his son soon become homeless, however, Chris is determined to become a stock broker, a well paying job.

This film is based on the book of the same name by the real Chris Gardner. So, yes, this is based on a true story. Basically, if you know the story the movie isn't all that much of a surprise. There was one scene that was very sad, intense and scary all at the same time. It was a sweet film and it was well done, but I wouldn't spend another 10$ to see it again. Jaden Smith (Will Smith's actual son) did a really good acting job. It was impressive. But ya, the movie didn't make me cry, but it was all right.

Sincerly,

P.S. I have to do a little "shout out" to Lisa. She's in great need of attention. As always. Attention starved. Love you Lise.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (On DVD)

-In the year 2003, Uma Thurman will kill Bill.
-The Fourth Film by Quentin Tarantino.
-Here comes the bride.
-On October 10th, speak softly and carry a big sword.
-On October 10th...a Quest for Revenge begins.

-Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Starring:
-Uma Thurman
-Lucy Liu
-Vivica A. Fox
-Daryl Hannah
-David Carradine
-Michael Madsen
-Julie Dreyfus
-Chiaki Kuriyama
-Sonny Chiba

The Bride (Uma Thurman) wakes up, after a long coma and starts out her quest for revenge against the people who killed everyone at her wedding, and tried to kill her.

I loved this one. It was very Japanese anime-like. There were a couple of things that didn't make sense, but they were barely noticeable and the rest of the movie made up for them. Also there was some subtle humour in it, which I really liked. The action was fantastic, the dialogue was pretty good and I liked that it was mostly women kicking ass. This was a great movie. Plus Daryl Hannah is in it, who I love ever seen seeing Blade Runner, in which she is Pris.
Perhaps I'll do Blade Runner next.

Favorite Tagline: Here comes the bride.

A Life Less Ordinary: 10/10

A Life Less Ordinary (On DVD)
Directed by: Danny Boyle
Taglines:
-A comedy for anyone who's ever been in danger...of falling in love.
-A twisted love story from the filmmakers of "Trainspotting".
Starring:
-Ewan McGregor
-Cameron Diaz
-Holly Hunter
-Delroy Lindo
-Dan Hedaya
Robert Lewis (Ewan McGregor) is a cleaning janitor in L.A. He is fired and replaced with cleaning robots. So, he takes his boss' daughter, Celine Naville (Cameron Diaz) hostage. Two angels, who are in charge of human relationship assignments, try to bring Celine and Robert in love. If they are unsuccessful, they can't go back to heaven.

I love this movie! It's funny, in a not so funny way. It's a humour that you have to get. It's hard to explain. But if you get the movie then you'll love it, if you don't get it, then I'm sure you'll still enjoy the storyline and concept of the film. A plus for the film is the fantastic soundtrack. It goes so perfectly with the movie. It's fantastic. Definetley one of my favorite movies.

Sin City: 7/10

Sin City (On DVD)
Directed by:
-Frank Miller
-Robert Rodriguez
-Quentin Tarantino (special guest director)
Taglines:
-Hell of a way to end a partnership.
-Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything.
Starring:
-Bruce Willis
-Mickey Rourke
-Clive Owen
-Jessica Alba
-Benicio Del Toro
-Brittany Murphy
-Nick Stahl
-Elijah Wood
-Jaime King

Not set in chronological order, the story follows three different individuals. John Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is an honest cop (unlike most things/people in Sin City). He is trying to save pre-teen Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) from Roark Junior (Nick Stahl) who is a rapist and serial killer. The second person is Marv (Mickey Rourke). A big thug. He spends the night with a prostitute named Goldie (Jaime King). As they sleep, she is murdered, soundlessly. When Marv awakens and hears the sirens, he realizes that he has been set up. He promises Goldie's dead body that he will avenge her. Once he escapes the house, he looks in search of Goldie's killer. The third man is Dwight McCarthy (Clive Owen) is a private investigator. Shellie (Brittany Murphy), his girlfriend, is being harassed by her ex-boyfriend Jack Rafferty (Benicio Del Toro). After some events take place, Jack and his friends leave Shellie's place and goes to Old Town. Old Town is a place where all the prostitutes live and rule.

I was really excited to finally see this movie, but it was kind of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but I expected it to be better. It was pretty sexist too, in a way. But I guess that's what the stories are about. Some of the people said things in ways that just made you think, "Are you serious?" And the "asian" girl, really didn't look asian. It just looked like they made her eyeliner go upwards. I liked the way it was parted into three different stories and I did like the nararration of the characters. So, overall it was pretty well done. I give it a 7/10.

Sidenote: The movie is an adaption of Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name.
